The Myanmar team had produced an Inequality report which was long ready to be published. However, because of sensitive political timing and small space for civil societies to share a critical voice, the report had not been launched yet. Ideally, the team wanted to launch the report along with the Asia Inequality report. What they needed was some support in analyzing the civic space context and the risks that would come with launching the report.
Oxfam in Myanmar colleagues reached out to the Fair EiU Support Mechanism (FESM) to find someone who could help in analyzing the civic space context, and who had some experience in launching inequality reports in a sensitive political context. Oxfam is the only international organization in Myanmar that is working on Inequality, so the team really felt the need to share the results of their research findings.
Together with FESM advisors, the team used the civic space toolkit to analyze the context and set up a dissemination & media plan that had a strong risk analysis. Together they decided on the framing for the key findings of the report and made sure that not too big risks were taking in the launch. This helped the team in Myanmar to feel more secure about launching their report – being aware of the risks and having a good mitigation strategy.
